DIY - kronkelbellen/earrings with a twist

DIY - kronkelbellen/earrings with a twist

This week's project was one with a lot of obstacles : my first attempt looked completely different but it was a total failure. So I made something else with the twisted pieces but that something else wasn't succesfull  either. My 3th attempt was the good one , this one .

BENODIGDHEDEN/SUPPLIES :
materiaal
- metaaldraad.

material :
- metal wire, preferably in a 'natural' color. It is difficult to work with fancy colored metal wire without damaging it. My wire was 1 mm thick
- 2 nice beads, I used Czech 'cathedral'beads
- 2 head pins
- ear wire
- 2 tiny brass colored spacers
tools :
- a wig jig with pegs in different sizes. You can read all about this tool here.
- 2 flat nose pliers, one of them with a smooth surface
- round nose pliers
- cutting pliers
- a hamer
- a small anvil or something that can be used as one.

Make the twisted ornament.
Put 5 pegs onto the wig jig as shown on the picture. I used one big peg, 2 smaller ones and 2 of the smallest.

Fold the metal wire around the pegs as shown on the picture. Be sure to start in the right direction or else you will fail making the twisted piece. Follow the shape of the wire the same way as shown at the picture.

Cut the wire a few centimeters ahead from the last twist and carefully remove the wire from the wig jig. Now you have a twisted piece of wire, but it has not yet it's definitive shape.

Cut the loose ends of metal wire.
Use your fingers and the flat nose pliers with smooth surface to carefully move the piece of wire in the right shape.

Put the piece of wire onto the anvil and hamer it. By hammering a piece of metal wire, it becomes stronger. The hammering fixates the shape of the wire. Don't be to gentle while hammering : it doesn't have a lot of effect when you are to soft. But don't beat to strong either : it will flatten the wire to much.

These pictures show the difference between a finished piece and an unfinished one. The wire piece on the left is already done. At picture one the piece on the right side was just removed from the wig jig.
At picture 2 it is already more shaped by using the flat nose pliers and your fingers.

After hammering you need to use the flat nose pliers and your fingers again to shape your piece of wire until it's final shape.

Make a pendant with the bead and the small disc bead by making  a loop onto the head pin as shown here.

Hang de kralenhanger aan 1 van de oogjes.
Attach the bead pendant onto a loop.

Attach ear wire onto the other loop.

Make another earring, but make it the opposite of the first one.
